The North Coast Academy of Sport Surf Life Saving Program supports athletes from regional NSW exposing them to technical skills training, physical preparation and the latest training methods.
The North Coast Academy of Sport’s Surf Life Saving Program, supported and endorsed by SLS NSW, has selected 27 athletes in 2018 from the Far North, North, Mid North and Lower North Coast branches to participate in the annual athlete development program.
The program consisting of the three separate development camps focusses on improving the athletes’ technique and skills through coaching and video analysis. It also aims to help athletes understand and use Sports Science and advanced components of fitness such as psychology, nutrition, strength training and flexibility.
There is also a strong focus on encouraging athletes to adopt good racing and training routines and develop athlete’s life skills through discipline, teamwork, socialising and leadership required in a camp situation.
The Surf Life Saving Program Head Coach – Peter Kirkwood travels from Maroubra to lead the program and provide mentorship to Branch Coaches.
Kirkwood stated – ‘The focus of this camp at Lennox Head SLS Club will be ski & board paddling technique and skill improvements that are needed during the off season. Surf swimming and Pool events will also be covered. Glen Lawrence from the Byron Bay Club will again assist with his ski paddling expertise’
North Coast Academy of Sport Executive Director, John Kincade, said “The Surf Life Saving program is one of our flagship programs and allows athletes to be up-skilled in the out-of-competition season and the mentoring of coaches from other regions with the aim of developing these into strong independent programs themselves.
